The threat of a deadly asteroid impact is real. The answer to preventing it? Science … and you! As a Planetary Society supporter, you’re part of the solution in our mission to save humankind from the only large-scale natural disaster that can one day be prevented—potentially dangerous asteroids and comets or Near-Earth Objects (NEOs). And while we may have already reached our initial funding goal, the more funds we raise today the more we’ll be able to support astronomers protecting planet Earth!
The Planetary Society supports astronomers from around the world through our Shoemaker Near-Earth Objects Grant Program, given every two years. Named after Planetary Geologist, Gene Shoemaker, these grants provide funds so the astronomers can upgrade their observing equipment to help find, track and characterize near-Earth objects that could have a devastating impact on Earth.
Right now we are preparing to award our next round of Shoemaker NEO Grants, and we anticipate a stack of worthy requests from talented astronomers around the world. The more asteroid hunters you help us fund, the more we’ll be prepared to defend Earth!
