LightSail Update #3: Challenge Exceeded!

Success! Like a deft gravity assist maneuver, our member matching gift has helped us slingshot past our goal to add $28,000 to our campaign total.

Their matching gift represented 10% of the total cost of the $280,000 in direct hardware and software costs tied to the spacecraft upgrades. Like LightSail relying on the power of sunlight, from here on out, we will be relying on the power of our members to continue to give our spacecraft the gentle push it needs to meet our mission objective.

If you’ve already made your contribution to help us get to the launch pad at Kennedy Space Center, thank you. And if you can push a little more to help us meet our ultimate goal of being able to cover the total cost of upgrades, that would be extraordinary.

Thank you for your support!

If you haven’t made a gift yet, join us and become a stakeholder in this historic mission.

LightSail Update #2: A Further Challenge!

We’ve sailed well beyond our original goal of $100,000, and now several generous, aspirational members want to help us get all the way to the $280,000 in pre-launch costs.

To do that, they will match every dollar you donate, up to $28,000.

If you’ve already made your contribution to help us get to the launch pad at Kennedy Space Center, thank you. And if you can stretch to help us meet this new challenge, that we would be even more awesome.

If haven’t made a gift yet, join us and become a stakeholder in this historic mission.

LightSail Update: Let’s Soar Higher!

We did it!

Planetary Society supporters have met the challenge by our anonymous member to raise $100,000 and help get LightSail to the launch pad. With the initial goal now met, we get to add the $50,000 match!

It’s time to soar higher to fully fund our spacecraft improvements. Since the LightSail 1 test launch in 2015, the mission team implemented an extensive program of hardware and software upgrades along with a series of tests designed to ensure LightSail 2’s readiness. Not including travel and project management expenses, the direct costs for these improvements and tests are just over $280,000.

As we prepare to integrate LightSail with Prox-1, we ask our supporters to stretch to meet this need so that we can make it all the way to launch pad.

We believe in our community’s shared vision for this project—let’s soar higher together!

LightSail: Help Us Get to the Launchpad

The Planetary Society’s LightSail spacecraft is getting ready to make space exploration history as the first to demonstrate controlled solar sail flight of a CubeSat.

Known as the people’s spacecraft, together we’re ushering in a new era—the democratization of space—but there’s still so much to be done and we need your support to do it.

“We have lingered for too long on the shores of the cosmic ocean; it’s time to set sail for the stars.”
— Carl Sagan

We’re kicking off the final phase of preparations for the upcoming launch of LightSail 2 into space aboard the SpaceX Falcon Heavy Rocket. We need your help to get there.

When you make a gift today, your contribution —and your impact on the LightSail mission—will be boosted by a $50,000 matching gift challenge issued by a generous Planetary Society member!

And, with a gift to support LightSail, you’ll be invited to share that thrilling launch day with us, either in person or online.

Our time to sail the cosmic ocean has arrived; our technology and design advances can now achieve the high performance needed in space. Thank you for joining forces with us with a gift today. Together, we’re changing the world!
